Title: line test
Post by: morfowt on June 07, 2008, 03:41:55 AM
Ok, here, you can post test lines, and others will give you feedback on it. Sounds simple enough?
Title: Re: line test
Post by: morfowt on June 08, 2008, 06:54:12 PM
might as well use this. otherwise it's pointless

here's the lines I do for david in his first chapter.
http://www.mediafire.com/?zk1hjne21iy

obviously there's room for improvement. I want to know what you think and where I can improve.

Note: there aren't any for this segment, but you'll find that I do not do David's yelling very well.

Edit: here's my first thought-speak. I think it might be different from the thought-speak u guys are already using...
http://www.mediafire.com/?5qbid0tgcb3

This one there's yelling, and as you can see, I'm not very good at yelling.

Please don't take this badly morf, but I don't think your voice is right for David. From the start he was a bit more... abrasive for lack of a better term. You sound good for general voice acting though, just not someone as dark as David.

This is just my opinion of course.
Title: Re: line test
Post by: morfowt on June 09, 2008, 09:30:20 AM
can't really take that badly if I don't even know the meaning of the word abrasive...
Title: Re: line test
Post by: ~ on June 09, 2008, 09:42:11 AM
A bit more of an edge. Actually sadistic is a better word for it, kinda on the mean side.

Edit: Here's an example Jax did. http://www.mediafire.com/?o8m1udxtgnc (http://www.mediafire.com/?o8m1udxtgnc)

Awesome.

Also, I know I'm getting a bit ahead, but I decided to start recording my lines for Loren. I have the first run through of the first chapter done. There's a few things I want to fix, but I want your opinions first. Here you go:

so was it any good? sound at all like tobias? any tips on sounding more emo? cuz im really not emo
Title: Re: line test
Post by: Terenia on June 09, 2008, 06:59:23 PM
Oh, sorry. I didn't see that you had posted the new link. Dur.

::runs off to download land:: Gosh I wish these downloaded quicker...blah....

You sound really good actually! Yeah, it's not entirely emo, but it's a good narration and you have a good voice for the role, methinks. I think you can incorporate the "sounding emo" bits more of when he's talking. Otherwise, in the narration, the brooding kind of does it for you.

I think the beginning sounds better than the end. In the beginning you're a little more drifty and thoughtful about the way you talk, and as you go on you start almost sounding Jake-esque. If that makes any sense...
Title: Re: line test
Post by: morfowt on June 10, 2008, 04:04:25 AM
shanker, your david was pretty good-better than mine. *sigh* Guess I'm not very good at being abrasive...whatever that means.
do you want the part for david. I'd like to be david, but if it's better for the audibook, I'll let you have it.

your tobias...well let's just say it's not exactly how i'd picture him to sound like. Or maybe I'm just bad at guessing what people sound like...it's possible.
Title: Re: line test
Post by: Venom on June 10, 2008, 06:20:34 AM
no, no, no. i dont want to take david away from you. and if you have any tips, i'll work on my tobias
Title: Re: line test
Post by: morfowt on June 10, 2008, 07:04:34 AM
hmm...it's kind of hard to explain...the best way to say it is, you sound more like jake than tobias...although that's not very descriptive is it?

you sure? well alright then...hmm. maybe I'll just use yours as an example to help me make mine better...

Alright, here's my first go through as Visser 3. It's his opening speech. I'm gonna try to tweak the sound to get rid of the pops when I pronounce a word too loud. Let me know what you think, are the effects too much? Ofcourse, I'm trying to get that dark, I'll kill you, effect along with a bit of ambiance I imagined for thought speech.

I thought you read it el-fang(the teeth kind)-or.

hmm...I think it needs a bit more arrogance, or confidence...I'm not sure how to put it. maybe a bit more sneering...
Title: Re: line test
Post by: Terenia on June 16, 2008, 10:37:29 PM
I think the effects are pretty good. They might be a bit over the top, but then again he does sound all villainous and whatnot. I do agree with morfowt that some of the lines don't sound quite arrogant enough.

Otherwise, it's really good. :)

Seriously, the hardest part of Elfangors lines I'm having trouble line testing is Yes.

I tend to drag the S out and I dont like how it sounds, it sounds too menacing.

I dont know... it almost sounds fake when I try to make it sound deeper

Besides elfangors dying ,which is why I used that tone. He is weak and he's trying not to scare the wee kids.

Hello, my name is Wildweathel, and I am a linguisticoholic.

I'd like to offer my services as an accent coach.  I don't have much experience--or actually any experience, but I'm a language geek and I grok things like mergers and shifts.  In the attached demo I

1) Demonstrate my rendition of four accents (including my native one) reading this text:

Please call Stella.  Ask her to bring these things from the store:
six spoons of fresh snow peas
five thick slabs of blue cheese
and maybe a snack for her brother Bob
We also need a small plastic snake and
a big toy frog for the kids.
She can scoop these things into three red bags,
and we will go  meet her at the train station on Wednesday.

2) Give mrguy some unsolicited advice on how to sound more Californian as Jake.

3) Starting at 4 minutes, engage in a bit of what-the-heck-ery and give a certain popular character a valley girl accent.

Because I can.

Enjoy  >:D

Oops, a bit of confusion: who's playing Tobias?  Ken or Anitiger?

Ok.  Now that makes sense.  What was confusing me is that Combat Squirrel is also Ken.

If I may make a semi-educated guess, you're from the Pacific Northwest?

I once met a guy, at a car show, who after talking with me for about three minutes said:
"you're from Portland, Maine aren't you?"  Eerie.

Next up, I'm going to tame my CA-vowel-shift accent, listen to some people on youtube and give some advice on just how much shift to use.  Ultimately, though that's an artistic decision, up to the actors and director.

Morfowt/Lezduet is director, no?
Title: Re: line test
Post by: Mr. Guy36 on December 25, 2008, 03:12:19 PM
Midwest, actually. There really isn't an official director, though by the amount of work Morf has put in, he ought to be. I founded/organized, then slacked off like everyone else.

EDIT: Just heard the whole thing. I definitely think that this sort of stuff could help. On a side note, I think you should somehow talk to my cousin. She loves this kind of stuff.

That was actually fairly educational (and a bit humorous, with the Tobias part). I don't think I have enough lines out there for you to figure out, but any tips for someone with a Canadian accent who's going to be trying to pull off an Andalite character? lol. If I have a chance, I'll try and do some line tests for Aldrea, but until then, you can listen to my lines for Eva/Visser One in book 5, the dolphin trainer in book 4, and Jordan in book 2.

Aldrea will be odd for me, since though I usually imagine Andalites with a British accent, Aldrea never seemed to have one for me. So I'm still figuring out how I want her to sound. Which is all fine and dandy right now, since it'll be a while before we start HBC.

Sweet, I'll have to listen to that when I get home.

EDIT: Just listened to them, very handy! I'll take a look at the tapes you posted, and practice them. I do agree that I need to slow down my speech when I'm recording. The fast-speaking is probably the biggest indication of my Acadian-French upbringing.

As for the dolphin trainer, the accent probably doesn't matter as much, what with her being a very minor character. But, I may tackle her lines again after listening to the tapes.
Title: Re: line test
Post by: wildweathel on February 12, 2009, 10:41:01 AM
Ken,

Accent: "r"s after vowels should sound like "r"s before vowels (in most cases).  Actually, there are some non-rhotic Cal accents (Cal is crazy-diverse), but I really think Tobias should have a rhotic one.  I'll put up a tape for that.  Pronunciation of AY is correct for Tobias; you don't need the Canadian-raising tape.

Also, you might want to experiment with Cal vowel shift.  I'll do a tape for that too, but it's lower priority.

Audio quality is bad--especially the noise.  You deserve better recording equipment than what you're using.  What exactly are you using, by the way?

Welcome to the project, Agent.  I think I mentioned that I do accent coaching.  If you could find a ~200 word passage to read, I'd really appreciate that, so I can hear your native accent ("accent"="pronunciation system" everyone who speaks has some sort of accent).  I don't think Melissa has anything that long, so feel free to either record some other character's narration or something non-Animorphs.

The project site is still waiting on Richard.  I'll give him another poke, I guess.  If it's not up when I come up from CA, though, I'm really tempted to just go ahead and set it up on my dime.  (I'm going to launch a personal website at some point anyway; I've come to realize that I want to publish some of my writing, singing, perhaps an Esperanto blog...anyway)  We need it if we're going to get rolling.

Which reminds me, Agent.  We'll start with Megamorphs #1.  I don't think anyone has claimed the crazy woman whom Rachel meets.  Plus, we'll need extras.  So, we can find something for you to do even when Melissa doesn't have lines.

It finally stopped raining in Sunny CA, and Santa Clara's free internet works much, much better outdoors, so here I am.

Morf: I can't understand a word you're saying through all the processing, much less accent.  Sorry.

Agent: Sorry for any confusion about my name.  I usually go by wildweathel, only changing it for the parties.  You can keep calling me gryph if you prefer.

Okay, some impressions:

You've got a wicked ground loop.  That's causing the 60 Hz hum.

Your accent is very much like mine.  That's a bit of a problem, since I'm from Maine, not California.

Basically, there are two or three changes to get to a Cal accent:

Kewl!!!

We are working on MM1 at this time, and do not need anymore voice actors for this book. We've also set a requirement that anyone new to the project must be willing to help with directing/timing before they're allowed to put in for an acting role.

All roles in MM1 are already taken. We're starting with MM1 and moving from there, so no, there are no acting roles until we are done with this book.
