That the Animorphs was your favorite childhood story (that is of course if it really was)? I kinda do. I mean everyone else around me was wrapped up in reading these little scary stories called Goosebumps (which didn't even have continuity) while I was reading a truly epic intergalactic war story that continued from one book to the next. I wouldn't have called it "epic" but since it has the whole Ellimist vs Crayack and we are just pawns in their game that has been going on for billions of years I'd say it definitly deserves the title of epic.
Anyway the question is do you find it strange that your favorite series growing up was all about war.

Not really. What I always found weird is that my favorite series is science fiction, which isn't normally a genre I read much of.

i'm proud to be an animorphs-fan. it was pretty popular. (nowhere like goosebumps, of course)

When I was little I never thought of it as a story about war, just a series about a group of kids (each of whom I identified with for different reasons) who turned into animals to fight aliens. I've always loved the series and always will. It's the series that got me into reading (and eventually writing) and also increased my interest in animals (which led to me choosing animal care as a career).
Funny thing is that I knew it must have been popular to have made so many books (plus it's own TV show) but I never met anyone in real life who was a fan. I've had friends who've read some of them and my older bother brother read a couple (and listened to me tell him about the rest, lol) but I never knew anyone who was really into the books until I found RAF Classic back in 2003.

I was surprised that no one else was reading the Epic story. Than again most people who were reading it were in Elementary school. I had to get the books by ordering them from those scholastic papers the Elementary school students get. So my brother would get the books for me While I was in High school. Because of that my brother got into teh story. But of course no where as into it as i am. <_< which is why I'm a member here and he is not.

I didn't find it odd. Goosebumps and Fear Street were my favorite book series before Animorphs, but once I found Animorphs those other series eventually paled in comparison.

Me too. I was always strictly an "online" Animorphs fan. I found a pretty large online community of fans (of which anijen was a part of!) when I was relatively young....ten or eleven? And that was the only place I would ever express my interest for the series. In the real world I was embarassed, because everyone would be like, "Oh, you read those alien books with the ugly kids on front? lolz." So I kept it to myself....they just thought they were SO cool for reading Goosebumps. >.<

the only thing i found odd was there was very few of us who loved it.. thats how i made best friends with someone at school.. when i saw an animorphs book in her locker..
i've been trying to ask her to come here.. but she just hasn't....
i almost brought an animorphs book to work last night, andalite chron. when i was younger that was the book i could read over and over... but i know people at work would be making fun of me... and i dont know.. im supposed to be the supe and i guess i dont want everyone thinking im immature or something...

I was never secretive about it. I read the books on the bus and during lunch period. I was friends with a schoolmate mainly because I saw him reading one of the books. Unfortunately I graduated before the series finished, so I may never know what he thought of the ending.

I actually had quite a few friends who also read the books when I was younger.
In fact, that's how I got hooked on the books in the first place. I had a friend who was so obsessed with Animorphs that she wouldn't shut up about it until I read the books. Lol, talk about role reversal!
And I was never secretive about my obsession, either. Probably because I had so many friends who also read the books. Funny thing was, even though I was constantly reading the books in public, and even though I had a pair of bullies that would make fun of me for everything else, I never got teased for it. I think the worst thing that ever happened to me at school relating to Animorphs was that one of the bullies moved my bookmark to mess with me. 0.o
Now, of course, my obsession is a lot more subdued, at least in public. Most of my friends know how I feel about Animorphs, but I don't tend to take my books to public places anymore.

I remember taking #42 when it was fresh and newly released when I was on a field trip in Highschool
Forest Ecology class.
I remember hiding in the bathroom to read my book undisturbed.

i was never secretive. i remember in elementary school, every kid at school read Animorphs (and Goosebumps)
And even when i started seeing less people reading them, i still kept my love for the series public lol. Even now in my college dorm room i have my animorphs collection out in plain view. People see it as soon as they enter my room lol

To answer this question directly, yes , I would say I do find it odd that my favorite childhood story ( and continuing adult favorite!) is Animorphs; although I didnt fully perceive it as a war story untill much later in the series when things got very dicey. It was when I read Hork-Bajir Chronicles that I realized how grand the story was. How it goes into the past and future, shapes your perception of many charcters from their point of view, not one or two. I suppose war draws the attention of many people, as opposed to all too common romance novels, and blah scary stories like Goosebumps with no real value to them. But Animorphs brought us something very different and special, as you put it, an " epic war story" unlike anything else put out there before or after. I quickly realized this point immediately after discovering Animorphs so long ago, and thats why I cant let it go.

For me, the weird thing was that Goosebumps was so popular! And that Animorphs wasn't popular in France... I mean, my friends only remember have heard of/seen the stupid TVshow!
PS: And even more, I can't understand how nobody read Shadow Zone and Spooksville, when - I think - it was better than Goosebumps ^^'

it didnlt exactly scare me and i'm not sure if it was spooksville or not.

Hmm. As I remember, Goosebumps was more "what-if" strange speculative fiction than scary. It was pretty decent, if not real memorable.
I for one have no shame. Well, almost no shame. Let me put it this way. Last week, Mum was all on my case.
"Weathel," says she, "Make your Christmas list."
I'm thinking really, I'm a pretty happy guy. All I want for Christmas is my security clearance and a solid job offer. But, she's all insistent, so I set out picking some reading material that's at my reading level in Japanese. That doesn't have too much boobage on the cover, since that's kinda embarassing.
"Whacha readin', Son?"
"Oh not much, just the cover's trashy. Honest."
So, after some searching I settle on three comics and a book of short stories by MIYAZAWA Kenji. One of them is called "Yotsuba to! (http://yotuba.com/yotu_comics.html). Yes, it's supposed to be every bit as bright and cheery as the covers suggest. And yes, I have no qualms of taking that to work to read at break time.

Box two will include a volume or two of Animorphs. I'm not quite at that level yet, but yes, the art's amazing and I wouldn't be embarrassed to read that in public either.

hmmm...now that you mention it...no. I was a kid in 3rd grade, and the cover of it intrigued me because it was fantasy-ish (of course, more sci-fi ish). I remember my close friends read it, but when I moved schools in 5th grade, I found a group of friends who solely came together because we shared a common thought in animorphs.
Now in college, i'm meeting more and more people who have read it...i mean, my two closest friends have and its interesting to find out who has and who hasn't!

No, it isn't a Spooksville ^^'
Spooksville and Shadow Zone weren't scary, but they were a kind a "funny horror" books. Shadow Zone was like a "what if"... a mummy want you to help it/your sister's boyfriend is a werewolf/an alien wanna kill your sister... but we usually see that the monster isn't so bad.

I was never really secretive about it, nobody really knew about it though. I stared when I was in 4th grade. This kid who skipped a grade was reading #8. I took one look and thought it was some weird book. the next day I read the summary and went to the back of my classroom (where the class library was) and picked up #1. I got hooked half way through. I still remember thinking "what kind of name is Visser Three?!" I read a book in public once. I never found the entire series on paper, but the books helped.

I got into Animorphs for the animals, stayed for the aliens, and was really influenced morally and imaginatively by the war story. I absolutely loved all the little parallels to historical wars, and the shades of grey on all sides of the war.
I think I've always liked war stories? :P

Well, I think it's safe to say my obsession is a running joke among the people who know and (hopefully) love me. There are three things that I really like: Buffy, Angel and Animorphs. But I *really* like them, meaning I talk about them way too much and make references during normal conversations ("Oh, god, there was this one Animorphs book where X happened and I remember thinking Y and that is so how I feel right now about this moment, man, this MOMENT") My friends, however, are dorky themselves. We almost built a giant TARDIS out of cardboard to watch the End of Time Part II. So it's nothing I'm embarrassed about; I have a few friends who like the series a lot (albeit not like I do) and we discuss it from time to time.
There's very little I'm embarrassed about, though I do blame the fact that I've read all four Twilight novels on my 15 year old sister.

i don't remember ever finding it odd that i liked a series about a war. i just remember that Animorphs and Goosebumps were the two book series that i saw everywhere when i was in school growing up.
i recently became friends with this girl because we had a mutual friend. And i told her 1 night how i was re-reading Animorphs yet again. she got so excited because she thought she was the only person who remembered the books lol

Yeah. We met in person when we were....how old? 14? 15? Something like that.
We've known one another for a loooong time, hehe. I don't remember how old I was exactly when I met her.

Well, you're a year younger than me, so it's however old I was -1. I know we met when I was in either 8th or 9th grade, b/c I was on an orchestra field trip to Chicago.
And yes, we're old.

lol yeah it was either seventh or eighth grade for me...must have been seventh grade, because that was when I was super into roller coasters.

I was a fan of both animorphs and goosebumps, though I liked animorphs a lot more because I scare easily. actually now that I think about it, goosebumps is ranked pretty low on my favorites. It's ranked 4th out of 5.
anyway, I don't find it weird at all. most of my friends enjoyed longer books like eragon. I, on the other hand, wasn't much of a reader and didn't enjoy long stories at all. they put me to sleep. in fact.

I went from reading Gooebumps to Animorphs, Goosebumps was more of the same after awhile, while I love Sci-Fi.

The way i look at it now, Goosebumps was like the Taking Back Sunday of books, and Animorphs was like the Brand New. I think Animorphs was definately better and more interesting, though Goosebumps had it's moments.

I enjoyed Goosebumps, though none of them really terrified me. At least not untill the 'night in terror tower' and 'how to kill a monster'.
