Are there any real seasons mentioned? I know the story takes place over a few years. I haven't read it in a while, but still, is there mention of school being out for the summer, or any such thing? Thinking back, I can't remember anything.

right, on topic, how could they have been in CA? there are no wild wolves in CA. there havent been since the 1920s when humans wiped them out. Does it ever say they are in CA?

The wolve thing likely a KASU; are there any wolves in coastal American states?

no, the wolf was exterminated in all lower 48 states. they were found only in alaska and canada till the small population was introduced into yellowstone a few years ago
