? and what do you do with it?
-
It's a system where one rates a user's posts. Applaud is to add Karma, Smite is to remove Karma. How it's set up now is that it displays your total karma, that is applauds minus your smites.
A few additions to the Karma system.
When you create a topic you get one Karma.
You can see who has the most Karma on the Stats Page (http://animorphsforum.com/forum/index.php?action=stats)
-
ah intresting
thats pretty cool i guess
-
It is. We can use it to pin-point problem members. Also there is a 1 hour wait on giving or removing Karma for members. Not staff.
-
sounds like that would be pretty useful for when the real forum comes back
-
Except it's not an option over on Conforums.
-
ah that's lame. I like this karma thingy.
-
Uh oh, I smited Richard! :o
Don't worry, I applauded back. hey whats wrong with you guys, I'm still on O
-
i have seen Karma on other forums and you need to get rid of it.
it's too much of a subject of abuse
-
ah but I like the karma thingy... it's cool.
-
i dont feel people on raf would abuse it, atleast the people i know. but i guess it could be abused. i tried to give claire some karma today but it said i have to wait an hour to do it again, can the staff not give it out more? or are we just not be affected by it.
-
just gave you karma esplin! yay for you!
I like the karma thingy. don't get rid of it!!
-
i dont get it, how do you give or take karma? its not giving me any such option that i can see
-
theres applaud or smite
-
I smite you all. Grrr.
... kidding, kidding. Nothin' but love baby. *peace sign* ;)
-
i dont get it, how do you give or take karma? its not giving me any such option that i can see
Newbies can't smite or applaud. Just post once more...
-
pff thats ridiculous, im not going to post one more time
-
Lolz. I would applaud that, but I'm still a newbie. Haha.
-
lol I did applaud it.

oh that's pretty cool. hehe your awesome Rich. Must take a lot of time getting all this set up. ;D

Not really. I'm actually dreading getting down to the nitty gritty of things (theme editing etc). Which will have to come in time.
-
Hmmmn. I have 7 smites. I wonder what caused THAT.
Ah, well!
Love me, love my weirdness!
-
yeah well have 8 smites and only 16 applauds
-
umm... I've got 2. damn I need to try harder. ;D
-
Karma is a sweet, sticky, light-brown colored candy. Oh, wait, that's caramel...
I don't know if I've been smote/smitten/smited. Grr, Estelore has me gramatically confused now...
Anyway, thanks Rich!
-
I now have 12 smites.
How in Hell?!?!
I feel that perhaps someone is systematically removing all my applauds, until I only have those that result from starting many topics.
Grrrrrrr.
-
you get karma for starting topics?
-
Yeah.
Drats. Now everyone wanting Karma will be trying to outdo my topic-starting record. Phooey.
That ISN'T why I started them, of course, but I know how people think.
-
Where do you see all of your applauds or smites? Or are you guys just guessing?
-
it's on the stats page:

Grrrrrrr.
wow. now you only have one less smite than stormrider. third is me with 8 smites still.
I can guarantee, I didn't smite you estelore.
-
Thanks, Morfowt. :)
I've never smitten you, either.
-
I'd NEVER smite you my love :)
In fact...
*applause*
-
Aww, gee! Thanks!
*applause*
-
*SMITE*
jks
-
Hey, I just applauded you, so be nice!
-
I love applauding people! *applauds everyone on this page*
-
Thanks! *applauds her back*
I now have 13 bad Karma. WHY?!? How on EARTH did I end up at the top of the BAD list AND second in the GOOD list?
I feel so confused. :confused24: :crazy2: :droolfactor10:
-
YAY!!
+1
-
Now I am at the top of BOTH lists. Wow. :o
I'm doubly confused, too.
-
i guess people ethier love or hate your posts :]
i kinda think it would be sweet to have alot of smites lol
you know rattle peoples cages ;]
-
actually being at the top of the good karma is probably because you started a lot of topics. being at the top of the bad karma...people just smote you that much.
-
I've done the math, and I still have a massive amount of Good Karma, even without all the topics.
Whew.
So, where is all the Bad coming from? Seriously! I'm not sure if I'm flattered (that someone has cared enough to go out of their way to be mad at me) or insulted (that someone has gone out of their way to be mad at me).
Both. Definitely both.
>:( + ;D = ^-^
Edit: Now I even trump StormRider for Bad! What is going on?
-
yikes. don't we think stormrider is another venom in disguise? having more smites than him...that's kinda said.
I better be careful. I'm only 6 away from stormrider.
-
lol dont worry about smites, they mean absolutely nothing in the long run of life (please dont smite me)
-
I won't smite you. Just the opposite. I'm gonna applaud you. You're so right.
-
Some people see this karma thing as a silly game. They'll smite someone just because they don't agree with them. And they'll aplaud someone for liking the same TV shows. Just remember that if someone smites you, it doesn't mean anything. It's very silly and childish to care about something so unimportant. Not that any of you are childish or immature. You are all most definitely silly, though. :P
-
and in my case, crazy, weird, and an idiot.
oh and I'm also childish soemtimes
-
Ah, everyone is, sometimes. Adults are just afraid to admit it most of the time.
-
Yah, I know that it is childish. That is what makes it so irritating, actually.
Ah, well. :)
I'll live. ;D
What doesn't kill me, gives me more evidence in my favour on Judgment Day.
(Please don't give me any of that 'makes me stronger' shnitzel. Quadraplegics aren't dead, but they sure as Hell en't stronger, either. There are a few in my family, and I know that from what they've told me, so I'm not being totally callous and insensitive.)
-
Maybe it means stronger in character lovey?
-
Heaven knows.
-
one question for everyone here on this forum.
Does anyone actually use this, I seem to see that everyone had almost atleast one karma point, but I myself have only ever applauded something once, and that was my first day on the forum.
-
I seldom use it. although sometimes if I don't like a post I'll smite it, but only happens like once.
-

If someone writes out something thoughtful, funny, or anything that makes it standout in anyway, then I usually give a positive karma point.

Yea thats kinda what I do.. but sometimes I randomly applaude everyone on the page I'm looking at.. :P
Which is what I did just then..
-
oh, that explains why I suddenly have another karma point
-

we should applaud each other every hour and take over this karma thing with the higest karma ever!

Sometimes I use it. If someone says or does something nice, I give them an applaud. If someone says something that's rude or unnecessary, I give them a smite.
-
hey, este, you're no longer at the top of the bad karma list. That title belongs to me now (not that I'm exactly proud of it)
-
hey, este, you're no longer at the top of the bad karma list. That title belongs to me now (not that I'm exactly proud of it)
Well, at least you're still in positive territory.
-
Aww poor morf. I'm gonna applaud you. Coz your pretty awesome, dunno why someone would wanna smite ya so much.
-
I know why. It's because of his honesty and his ability to speak his opinion without the worry of what others think. In my opinion, that's a good thing.
-
Yeah, I always thought that was a good thing... unless your opinion is wrong. Hehe jk.
-

Well, at least you're still in positive territory.
only because I started 17 topics.
thanks you guys. I think I'll applaud you.
-
I dunno, I'd say Yorick has it the worst right now. He(?) has started 18 topics, and has 19 bad karma, bringing the total back down to 0.
Ouch.
Can't say I didn't see it coming though. :P
-
um...no he only has 18 bad karma, which mean before anna just gave me a karma point, we were in the same boat.
-
if you're not on the top ten lists, is there any way to check your own karma and see how many times (not who, just how many) people have smitten you and applauded you, other than just the grand total?
-
I don't really check the stats page much, so I only just noticed that I'm in the Top Ten Posters! I know it makes no difference at all, I just thought it was cool! 8)
-
haha, congrats, phoenix
-

There isn't. Staff members can though. So you could ask one of us to have a look.
You haven't been smited by the way
-
Wow, I'm in shock... Thanks Richard!
-
Ya know, I'm tempted to smite Jen just because she hasn't been smited yet lol. But I won't.
-
In the future I may implement a system where if you applaud or smite someone it comes from your count.. That should be fun.
But then again, persons may become afraid to give/take points...
-
It would come from your own karma count? So then if you applaud someone you'd be giving them one of you karma points?
-

Right.

-
Yeah it would be. But then when you smite someone would it add to your count?
-
Yeah it would be. But then when you smite someone would it add to your count?
No, it will be removed also.
-
Weak, that limits my ability to smite
and I like smiting
It makes me feel like a big man
-
Yeah it would be. But then when you smite someone would it add to your count?
No, it will be removed also.
Awww. :( :P
Haha Rob. I'm gonna applaud you coz that was funny. And coz your awesomely sextastic.
-
hey, I'm no longer at the top. Someone smote este, so now she's at the top again.
and richard, to applaud we have to give our own? that sounds stupid to me. Applaud is a nice thing to do, so shouldn't we get a karma point as a sort of mini-reward instead of losing a karma point?
-
So, wait... If you smite someone, does that mean you lose one of your smites?
-
no you lose one of your own karma points
-
Okay, so giving karma in any way makes you lose a point?
-
yep
-
Then people would be discouraged to use the karma system.
-
yep.
I don't think they should be discouraged to use the system, rather discouraged to smite.
-
Yeah. I think it should add to your amount of smites to smite someone, but have no effect if you applaud.
-
nah, I think you should get a karma point if you applaud...although that might get out of hand...I change my mind. I agree with charlie now.
-
Your Karma points shouldn't be affected either positively or negatively for rating someone else. It should affect them, not you. It completely takes away the whole point of the rating system.
-
ok, now yorick is worse off. He's got 39 bad karma; even more than este, although I'd say he got it coming for him, yelling at phoenix...well maybe not really yelling.
-
Personally, I think we should just keep the Karma system how it is. It's easier that way. Besides, I think if we changed it then people would be discouraged from applauding.

Yeah.

My opinion, not terribly important:
Keep the applaud factor normal (no penalty), but make smiting someone an act that demands real consideration. Perhaps make it so that smiting takes away one or two of your own points.
Reasoning:
1. If someone is SERIOUSLY having an impossible time finding his/her niche here (in other words, if they are royally pi**ing everyone off and making NO friends), it would be immediately obvious to them and to anyone in contact with them. They might even consider changing their habits.
2. Anyone smiting someone else would have to have a MAJOR reason for wanting to do it (I KNOW that we can report stuff to the mods, but sometimes we'd rather not have to go QUITE that far, if another avenue can peaceably be taken), so nobody would just randomly and pettily smite someone who may or may not have had it coming.
Honestly, I've gotten to the point that I don't mind even remotely that I spent quite a while on the top of the Bad-Karma list, since common concensus appears to state that I am generally liked.
Mostly, I'm flattered by the attention that someone has committed to being mad at me. ;)
However, if the situation were such that I were a newbie here, those gut-shots would be a serious kick to my online self-esteem, and I'd probably reconsider my choice of forum.
Because of this, I have a suggestion (might not be possible, but worth suggesting).
Maybe make it so that we would 'lose' more points if we smote someone who was a newbie (really, anything less than 100 posts, else they're not terribly well-known), and fewer if we smite a 'veteran' RAFian, who has been here long enough that they can roll with it.
People would be less likely to smite a kid who doesn't realise his/her mistakes the way another of us would. They'd probably just gently give him/her a 'hint' as to how they should behave in a civilized place like RAF, instead of smiting them, because it wouldn't cost them anything.
Happy all around, more-or-less.
Anywhodle, that's my suggestion, take it or leave it. :)
-
Sounds like an excellent idea to me. With the current system I could just repeatedly smite anyone I happened to dislike if I were a rude sort of person, and say someone with nothing better to do decided to make an account, make some posts, and smite everyone repeatedly until banned.
I'm biased though as for no reason that I can immediately discern I have been 'smitten'. twice. ::) (I actually find it amusing)
It doesn't really worry me, I don't believe in a system like this that makes peoples opinions overly public, and subsequently I will allow my actions to speak for me and ignore my own Karma and everyone elses.....
But the fact that I acumulate 2 negative points before I get to know anyone or even become involved in something controversial (which I usually inevitably do at some point :P ) should be cause for a double-take as its possible it is a symptom of deeper issues with the system, or a single unkown entity abusing the system.
Not necessarily, for all I know and for all my experience and for all the times I have re-checked my posts its possible I made an error I havent noticed. But if not....
Think about it, think about what Estelore said, and think about the fact that if someone can smite anonymously with no reprecussions whatsoever, all it takes is one person to be a wolf in sheep's morph, or one person to be having a bad day to throw the systems purpose out of alignment. :-\
Now to play devil's advocate, in a perfect universe the system allows people to know when they are generaly overstepping their bounds, and it allows people to anonymously give people a nudge. The system has pros and cons, and like any system the biggest cons have to have checks and balances somewhere.
Another con is that I could look at someone who is on the top of the bad Karma list and assume they are a jerk, but they might have been a good friend if I hadnt leapt to a conclusion.
Another pro is that I could carefully evaluate a persons Karma against examples of their posts and conversations with them to give me an extra variable in forming opinions.
Pros and cons.
Its particularly curious as I have been a part of many social groups, many of them web forums, and have some experience with this sort of thing (this is the only place I have seen it work), and having checked and rechecked my posts the worst negativity I've recieved in the few days I've been here was being told I accidently repeated something someone else said in a thread. :P hardly cause for being *gasp* smitten.
Like I said, it doesnt phase me, but this is a sterling example of my innate instinct to become involved in a debate and make a 'thesis' post out of it even if I care very little for the topic or have no stake in it. :P ;D
Its also an excellent insight into the ridiculously complex matrix of relationships and emotions that is a community.
EDIT; having looked at the top bad and good karma list and leafed through some posts of those members, (which by no means constitues a full steady of this system or those people) I find it most intriguing that several people are on *both* lists.
This either means that;
A; they're controversial people, the sort of people you either like or dislike no gray areas (possible),
B; that they suffer from severe bi-polar (unlikely)
C; that there are three kinds of people here, people who get judged, people who judge smitingly and people who applaud alot, (also possible)
D; that there are other variables I havent seen yet that create other possiblities. (most likely)
-
I doubt it's C or B.
Edit: did you remember to add in how many topics the person started to your equation? cuz you get one karma point for each topic you start.
-

I agree. I was trying really hard to get my karma up and had gotten as high as 9 before someone went on a smiting rampage against me after he attacked me (a person who has only like 50 posts too)! I've considered quiting this place a few times today out of sheer frustration and still haven't ruled the possibility out (despite the fact that most of you are awesome people).
Smiting needs to be controlled more closely (if reasonably possible).
-
Well, for starters, Wotw, we LIKE HAVING YOU HERE, so please do not leave. You're amusing. :)
Second...TRYING to get your Karma up? Well, jeez, it isn't THAT big a deal [says the chick with too much Karma anyway], but I gave you a point for free. Happy Un-Birthday. ;)

Lol, I assume being amusing is a good thing... (however I'm well aware that monkeys at the zoo are considered "amusing" too...)
Thanks, but I kinda feel like that's a stolen one. Wasn't looking for pity so much as venting. But thanks anyway. ;D
We'll see if this situation resolves itself...

I keep hearing about this good karma/bad karma list and I can't find it anywhere. Can someone link me, pretty please?? :-\
As for people being on both lists, I think there are probably many controversial people here.

Merci beaucoup!! :)
Wow, some very interesting statistics there.
