Its in there a dozen plus times in every book.

Exhibit A: quaf has no life

The word thermal is said 128 times in the whole series, and explained/defined 13 times. So if you don’t know that a thermal is a piller of warm air by now, you obviously didn’t read the books properly. It is in fact only said over 12 times once, in #3.
Also, I searched all the chronicles and they don’t mention thermals at all.

Here is a doc with all the quotes from each book where the world thermal is used. The page numbers are from the ebooks so have fun trying to find the quote in the actual book.

Here is a spreadsheet where I wrote down all the numbers and which character said them

Now for some graphs

* The word count throughout the series. It is positively skewed, possibly due to ghostwrites or less adventures in the air. The book with the most mentions was #3, The Encounter. 41/58 (70%)of the books had the word thermal in them. (The last four bars are the megamorphs but for some reason it won't label them on the graph)

* A character pie chart of who said thermal. Surprise surprise Tobias had the most at 59 (nearly half of all mentions!), and if you look at the quotes whenever another character said thermal they were often talking about or to Tobias. Coming in at second was Cassie with 20. Ax was the lowest with only 6 mentions.

So yeah, analyse, discuss it or whatever.

OMG thats amazingly awesome and also hilariously entertaining

donut:
Ahh... But what's the character's mention of thermals per book?  Jake had more books than As or Tobias.    :D

I'm kidding, that is pretty awesome  :XD: :XD: :XD:
