Title: RAF Forum updated!
Post by: Richard on June 19, 2011, 12:05:44 PM
Ok guys,

I took the liberty to update the forum software (SMF) to the latest build 2.0.

This means that during the next few hours/days/weeks we will be bringing the forum back to it's previous state in terms of features added over the past few years. So if you can't do certain things like view your Karma log; or even see advertisements, don't be frightened, these features may return.

That being said, the Forum now benefits from 100s of new features on your end and on the back-end.

So enjoy.

This is so awesome! I love it!  :D

I love the minimalistic sleekness! Good work! ;D

One question.  Will we eventually be going back to the traditional ‘RAF’ appearance?  Blue background, fancy lettering and all?  I don't mean to sound ungrateful, since I am excited about new features :D, but it’s just that I really liked the way the forum looked before and I would be sad to see it go.

Yeah I agree with DN. The previous appearance and layout is much preferable to this one.

I'd love to bring the forum back to how it looked prior to the move here. But time is scarce these days.

That's okay, I don't mean you have to do it right this instant.  I was just worried that it was gone forever and I'd never see it again.

By the way, I admittedly don't know much programming, but if there's anything at all that I can do to help, let me know.

If you need some help with that Richard, you can email me the .zip files of the old theme and the current one and I can modify the php and image files to match. I can even come up with a couple of RAF themes if you would like. That way users can choose their own theme.

I love this one, but obviously I'm a minority.

Honestly,I have to say I like the old design better then this one.

Wow. Okay, I really, really like this one! I miss the old layout, but...  This one's nice! :D Question, on other SMF forums I've been on, users have the ability to change the design for themselves. Like, they have different themes to choose from; is that something we'll be getting with this update? That'd probably appease everyone if it's possible. Otherwise, do what you do, Rich. You haven't done us wrong yet. :)

*EDIT*

Yeah, I liked the old design better, too. But I gotta feeling I'm gonna like this one better once I get used to it.

To those freaked out about the new appearance: I know very few of you were around for Classic RAF; you've only ever known what I still call "New RAF."  When Classic died, a significant number of us were majorly bothered by the new look, even though it was (to be fair) quite a bit more aesthetically pleasing than the Classic look.

The main reasons for the freakout, as far as I could tell, were lack of familiarity and therefore loss of comfort... and difficulty finding buttons and links that we were used to spotting reflexively. The icons for new and old threads looked different, for instance, so that was something to re-learn.

Now, I don't know if the updated forum will ever have the option of a 'skin' like original NewRAF, but from where I'm standing, this IS aesthetically more pleasing, and the introduction of a little orange does give nice contrast. The blue is still soothing and relatively familiar, and the only new things needing acclimation are the placements of links and the icons used to identify old and new threads, etc.

I totally understand being uncomfortable with unfamiliar things, and I'm not trying to sound like I'm scolding anybody, nor telling anybody how to feel. I'm simply suggesting, "don't knock it 'til you've tried it awhile."  The new skin might grow on you (wow, that sounds nasty XD).

Regardless, cheers! Thanks, Richard; I love the look of the place.

Ha. I like the change of colors in the quotations ^^
That's very neat and practical.

Although I am not fond of the general "roundness" of the new layout. I liked the well defined rectangles we used to have.

this.

I'm not a huge fan of the new look either, but yeah, I've already been through "classic" and "new" RAF. You get used to aesthetic changes. As long as it's light blue, it's good enough for me.

...although where are my smileys?...

A member of the year category has been included, nice.
But we cannot see who got online during the last 24hours :( Which is sad for my stalking nature.
Title: Re: RAF Forum updated!

I just noticed that some of the spoiler tags got broken, so that now whatever had previously been in a spoiler is there for everyone to see.  Thought I should probably mention that, since that could potentially become an issue for those who are allergic to spoilers (like me).

As far as the double-posting thing, actually, I never really liked being completely denied the ability to double-post.  I know, I know, it opens up the door for spammers who make three posts when one is plenty, but there are (at least occasionally) legitimate reasons to post twice in one topic, such as when nobody has posted in a long time and you have something important to say despite having been the last one to post in the topic before.

Then again, I'm sure it makes the mods' jobs a lot easier not to have to clean up random forum spam from double-posting, so perhaps the convenience to the mods trumps the inconvenience on our end.  Having never been a mod, I don't know.  I'm just putting in my two cents.

The lack of double posting was always kind of annoying for moderating on the Animafia board. And what DN said about being the last one to post, a long time ago. XD

Is it working now?
Title: Re: RAF Forum updated!

The spoilers seem to work for me.

True. But every time someone added something to their old previous post, the thread went back up on the top of the list of threads, so the merging system was not really penalizing.

EDIT:

Actually it was really convenient for a lazy bum like me since whenever I wanted to add something to my post, I could just write it in the quick reply and it would merge. Thus I would be spared both the inconvenience of editing and the stigma of being a double poster (if my laziness won over me :p)
Title: Re: RAF Forum updated!
Post by: Toc' on June 19, 2011, 07:11:44 PM
WHAT???
You can ADD PEOPLE to a BUDDY LIST!

EDIT

And I have no clue about what it does apart from making the names of the buddies appear in bold characters at the bottom of the forum when they are online.

EDIT
It seems to be the only thing it does, signals your buddies are online when they are online since we cannot see if they were online during the last 24hours, which is a pity, I like seeing who was online during the day.

I guess it would be useful in a really busy forum with at least 50 people online at the same time. On RAF it's a bit useless.
Title: Re: RAF Forum updated!
Post by: DinosaurNothlit on June 19, 2011, 07:55:34 PM
Yep, the spoilers seem to be working again.  Thanks for getting that fixed so fast!

EDIT: So, we can't give our reasons for karma-ing people anymore?  Is there any way at all that we can get that feature back, or at the very least make it optional?  I like to explain why I'm giving karma, and I prefer to know why other people are giving me karma, too.
Title: Re: RAF Forum updated!
Post by: Kit Cloudkicker on June 19, 2011, 08:32:39 PM
Another note: A reason isn't needed/able to be given for Karma anymore. You're also not able to see your karma log. Karma is only able to be given once an hour, period. Not just once an hour to the same person, but only once an hour to ANYONE.
Title: Re: RAF Forum updated!

I definitely don't like the new look.  It's not that bad.  It's just the old one was a lot better.  I agree with Toc about the rounded edges, they're better squared.

I like the different colors for quotes.

The karma limit is annoying.  Was there a reason for that change?

Are we still in a test phase, or are all of these changes permanent?  I'd like to know if we're wasting breath here.

try going to your profile theme (http://animorphsforum.com/index.php?action=profile;area=theme) and selecting ' Use sidebar menus instead of dropdown menus when possible.' (first thing i did when i logged in)
makes browsing through a heck of a lot easier.

also, WYSIWYG  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WYSIWYG)is a fantastic addition (click the(http://animorphsforum.com/Themes/default/images/bbc/toggle.gif) button to access it) - you might want to consider the option 'Show WYSIWYG editor on post page by default.'
you'll be able to make posts in more of a 'microsoft word' way rather than just using tags and previewing.

lastly, if you select text and then hit (http://animorphsforum.com/Themes/default/images/bbc/url.gif), you'll be able to add a named-URL (testing (http://animorphsforum.com/www.google.com)) - much easier than manually typing out testing (http://www.google.com)
images work similarly - just click  (http://animorphsforum.com/Themes/default/images/bbc/img.gif) and type the URL in - you'll actually be able to see it in the reply box before you submit your post.

Although I am not fond of the general "roundness" of the new layout. I liked the well defined rectangles we used to have.

yup. that's what's happening these days (i prefer a sharper look myself - i'll see what we can do about the theme).

vs
(http://netdna.webdesignerdepot.com/uploads/2009/03/windows-vista.jpg)

remember guys, this is the first day. we'll sort things out.

A little bit of roundness is neat but it's a matter of balance. Too much is overbearing.

This made me realize that facebook was really sharp for its time. Yet, it's working fine.
Sharp and well defined frames help you see the way things are organized better.

I don't mean to imply I don't like the new features.  They're great.  I do like the WYSIWYG feature.  I'll have to play with it for a little while to see what I can do with it.

It's a little glitchy, but I still like it.

Test of the new hyperlink feature. (http://www.despair.com/#)

It's also a little glitchy, but still good.

And yeah, I do judge forums and websites in general by color, probably for the same reason that carpets, cars, clothes, paintings, etc. are.  A feature that would allow users to choose their color schemes and even their layouts is an amazing idea, Goom.

I also want to say that we (or at least I) are not trying to criticize improving the forum.  We're just expressing our opinions so that you can get some feedback and make adjustments.

At the bottom of the front page, where it shows who's online, shouldn't the key (where it says what colors mean what kind of member) have "God" as black, instead of "Elite?" Since no one's currently an "Elite," I mean.

Look at the memberlist by posts. :P See anybody?

The only person who's been Elite since I joined was estrid. Then she donated. Then she became a mod. Then I proved that I remember way too many random things.

I would've gone Elite had I not donated. although, I've been toying with the idea of asking for a personal title. I was thinking about it, but I dunno if I wanna ask or not. :P

everybody who has 5000+ posts is considered a god (including the staff and donors), since it is one of the 'post count based groups' (which aren't shown at the bottom). the reason that you are seeing elite on there is because that rank is one in the 'regular groups' section that we used to mask over the god rank for requesting members.

i could always hide the elite rank, but i don't believe i can show the god rank down there unless i manually added a secondary group for each god member.

It always cracks me up when people say "ahh I have those ads about ...*unspeakable thing* "
 ;D

Personally, I had an ad for... The university of Adelaide for quite a while now, and "getting aussie business online".
I'm such a serious gal

BTW, I don't know what you did but now there is a massive problem with the quotes.
It might just come from me, but I doubt it. The quotes don't work fine anymore. When I clicked "quote" at the top right corner of Goom's post, it lead me to quick reply without letting me quote.
I had to go to "review" and then "insert quote" but even then it did not work right.

When you want to see one member's history, it only gives you the history of their threads, not their posts, no matter if you click message or topic.
How am I meant to stalk my bf to make sure he does not chat some rafian behind my back if I cannot keep track of his posts?

My only concern currently is the "Session timed out" message which is most annoying when someone has posted just before me (in between when I click reply and actually submit a new reply). Then I get stuck with the session timed out message every time I click Post until I decide to copy my message then go back to the original topic then click reply to reply.

It's probably already been discussed, but will we be able to see who has changed our karma again?
Title: Re: RAF Forum updated!

Yeah, I'm with Kelly. The karmic history and the comments we could leave with it was one of my favorite features of oldnewRAF or whatever the geezers are insisting we call it. Is that something I can reasonably expect to get back sometime soon?

All told, I'm very pleased with the new RAF, though. Good work, Rich ^_^ That said, aside from the karma thing, I have a few other (very) minor nitpicks.

The "post history" in people's profiles is still just showing a topic history. Being able to read posts by person isn't a feature I use remarkably often, but it is occasionally handy to have (and actually, in a possibly-unrelated tangent, it'd probably be really helpful to be able to browse posts by person within a topic- not sure if that's even feasible).

The quick reply is simple- I miss having the control buttons available down here. And the smileys. Miss my quick smileys. I've had to memorize the keystrokes for :P

When expanding the ellipses between the numbers for pages in a topic, it'll only expand in little jumps of 50 pages at a time. Not worth commenting on most of the time, but searching for something on, say, page 950 of the GESB archive gets a little tedious.

Umm... beyond that, I can't think of anything. I haven't noticed any lag lately and everything seems to be running smoothly. In the immortal words of Al Gore, we be RAFin'!

i believe the logs are still saved, but we'll most-likely have to wait for an compatibility update of the mod.

rich tried out a mod (which brought the stuff back), but there were some bugs so he removed it. i'm sure we'll have it back eventually.

i don't mind it actually. i agree with the GESB being affected, however. :P
http://animorphsforum.com/index.php?topic=8261.135 (http://animorphsforum.com/index.php?topic=8261.135) <-- the number at the end is the post # at the top. you can manually change it in the address bar to get to a page. there are (by default) 15 posts per page - you do the math. if the number you enter isn't divisible by 15, it'll automatically take you to the nearest page number.

if you keep clicking the ellipses, you'll move by 50 each time.

I was about to start the July RAF World Map when I realized nationality has been wiped from the profiles, as well as "about me" information. Some people have voluntarily entered their location (mine, for instance, says Houston), but this makes the map difficult if this info isn't there. Also, a lot of folks used to say where they were from in their about section, not in the location section. Is there a way to retrieve and display the old data?

Or

Is that 24 times total (i.e. I can applaud 24 people in a day) as opposed to... before I could give/take karma from the same person 12 times a day/every two hours, and do that for as many people as I want? XD   Though, oi, thinking of that many reasons for karma...

So goom  to raise your insanity levels I came up with smashing your head on the wall 37 times, then head over to the pool to hold your head under for just long enough for your brain to be completely deprived of oxygen and then smoke some shrooms.

Hey, I just had an idea!  For the 'activity' bar, would it be even remotely possible to implement a system where each individual member can determine what the bar measures?  Like, one member could leave it as "Insanity level" whereas another member might instead decide to write "Britishness" or "Luminosity"?

If that's too difficult to be worth implementing, then please feel free to ignore me, since I actually like "Insanity level" a lot.  :D  But, I'm also just a little bit curious to see what other members might come up with, if that were a customizable option.

Not sure if it's been forgotten or unfixable but the Profile "Show Posts" link still doesn't beyond the 1st page. once you click 'show posts' they'll be 3 sections to choose from on the page: messages, topics, and attachments.

i'm still noticing that a lot of the middle-range posts are showing up blank, though. that needs fixing.

All it shows at the moment are the first posts for topics you made. So it's exactly the same thing for "messages" and "topics."

They're the exact same thing, that is, except for the fact that "show posts" still lists the number of pages you'd need to view all of your posts. It's very noticeable with my profile, since I've only started about five topics. It shows the five posts I had as the first page in a topic on the first page (numbered 1-5), and those same five posts on the last page (numbered 20000+, based on what I assume is my current total post count), and in between I have over 1300 blank pages.

It's definitely broken in some way- almost reminds me of how unregistered guests to the forum are only able to view the first post in each topic, so it will only show posts that were the first post in a topic.

Anyway, that'd be a very nice feature to get working correctly, if you get the chance to tackle it >.<

Basically if your typing certain words and making certain searches it collects the data and will customize your ad. that technology is slowly going farther. So basically in the future your phone could get an update for 1$ off a low fat capachino at starbucks. The moment you drive by a starbucks. And thats exactly what you order when you go there.

Obviously the technology isn't perfect because it gave me an ad for a dating website exclusively for african people. Then again right now im getting an ad for full sail university which is one of the colleges that teaches you to program video games, and I have been talking about them a whole lot lately. In fact Im considering going there.

You can manually pick a colour for your fonts by working out the hex colour code for it. For example the colour of some of the background is #F5F5F5 so to use that colour it would be: <Ta da!>

Code: [Select]
Ta da!

Yeah, I know it, but having a default post color was so nice, and added a lot of flavor to the forum, since I'd started associating certain colors with certain people.

Also, this has been mentioned before, but can we get karma again for starting new topics?

I've gotten in the habit of just typing the codes in, Lumy.  :P

Yes, but we're donors and part of that is being able to default set a font color.

they're working on releasing a new version compatible with 2.0. we plan on bringing it back when they do.

i've gotten a few people asking this, so i figured i'd post how to hide the activity bar (client-sided).
download adblock plus (http://adblockplus.org/en/) (for firefox/chrome) and optionally element hiding helper (https://adblockplus.org/en/elemhidehelper).

after you've gotten it installed, go to 'preferences > filters > add filter'.
name it animorphsforum.com##.activity_holder
if you'd like to be able to turn off and on signatures on demand, you could also try animorphsforum.com##.signature
animorphsforum.com##.smalltext will remove nearly everything from posts besides the content and username; good for quick browsing.

disabling the filters is easy - just uncheck the corresponding box in 'my element hiding rules'
experiment around with element helper :)

Ebooks are still up when you google 'animorphs forum'. Are they supposed to be?

I actually just noticed this, sort of... I was on RAFClassic (digging info out of an ancient PM) and I saw the banner that said "Ebooks: Click here". So I did. And there they were.

Did you try opening one, though? Rather than actually giving you the PDF, it links you to Richard's post about Scholastic's letter.

Just wondering if there were any updates.... And I sorta miss my offensively-orange font colour. :P

No rush, just curious. Totally loving the new look once I got used to it, BTW, y'all. Looks*... Clean.

*fixed

Yeah, I quite liked my green text. But I guess this makes everyone's text more readable.

I didn't mean literal forum-update. I meant news-wise. :P
