Title: KEWL ANIMAL IMAGES - Image References
Post by: Gafrash on March 20, 2009, 12:18:41 AM
Wanted to make a separate thread just for animal references.

Anyone got any cool animal poses we could use for reference in the Novel?!

Basically, I don't draw animals a lot (mine tend to look crappy ;D) and don't have that many pictures to help.

So, if anyone finds or got any animals pics they want to share, please do!!!

Any artists would love a rich library of images for reference, and essentially that's what I would like to make this about.
Animals doing cool actions and photos taken from cool angles. Anything you could picture working in a comic.

ALSO, don't limit it to the big animals also.  ;)
I am still looking for some microscopic images of close-up anole, ants, roaches, spiders, etc...

There are a ****e load of bird images on google!!! Don't think we'll have any troubles with that!
The issue is getting a sense of their difference in scales through the net pics. It was through the books actually I remember learning the facts.
Like, red-tailed hawks being common throughout the North American continent. The peregrine was the smallest bird of prey in their range, but by far the fastest in a dive. Ironically matched by the great big golden eagles, who are also one of the fastest in a dive, inspite being one of the biggest. A golden eagle is bigger than a bald eagle.
That owl feathers don't make a sound. That ospreys and bald eagles are capable of diving and snatching prey and flying off without getting bogged on water. But check out the northern harrier pic, didn't know they could do it too!!

I believe the wolf spider was the one Marco and Ax had. The close up of its face is stuff of nightmares, indeed!

Wwwwwwwell, to put this thread back on track...
...I typed in 'tiger' in google and not many images are good action ones. I keep getting these articles on tiger attacks. Most notably the one in San Francisco.
They all have images of the notorious felines posing or lolling around, but what's remarkable to me is that there are SO MANY different reports, one would think it normal to hear of people that fall into the exhibits and getting mauled.
No wonder the Yeerks didn't really get alarmed by Rachel's stunt in The Reaction.
The irony is that in these trajic incidents they are all zoo or domesticated tigers.

Here's an image for a potential tiger enclosure:

I use this site (http://baranoff.org/column_index.htm) a lot for bird photos- great action shots for all our favorite birds. (Minus David's eagle, but you don't need him yet. ^^())

As for tiger action shots, if you need 'em....:

Oh, and fun fact. ^^()

When I was on a whale-watching tour thinger, our guide/boat pilot was telling us that groups of dolphins usually hang out around Humpbacks, because the whales protect them from sharks. And sure enough, whenever we got close enough to a whale, we'd start seeing some dolphins. ^^ I thought that was awesome... so it wouldn't surprise me if they did play together. ^^

Great site with the birds of prey, too.

Do you guys realize how challenging it can be to draw animals?!

Because of the variety of shapes and textures animals have, it can be real tricky to convey it in a style.
Very few artists achieve good results in a graphic format.

Any of you read DC Comics' Pride of Baghdad by writer Brian K. Vaughan?! If not, get it out, for Niko Henrichon, Vaughan's illustrator, did a splendid job.

There are some awesome panels! You will note that, even though he gave them a somewhat anthropomorphic 'feel', he used a lot of image references.

THIS is the level of artwork I had in mind. It's the kinda look I had in mind for when the Anis' morphed. And I could see it going real well with the way I draw my Hork-Bajirs and Taxxons.

Yeah, it's beautiful ^^ I hope you can draw something like that!
I really suck into drawing animals... really really! I could draw David the rat (maybe the easiest for me, 'coz I practiced a little to draw my degus), but when I tried to draw Cassie the wolf stopping Jake the tiger from killing Tom who took the cube... My wolf is really really horrible! I can't do anything good, even if I took an example from a cover! The tiger (second version lol) isn't that bad, but it's far from this art *pointing to the picture in your post*
When I find a way to scan my last drawings, I'll show how bad they are lol

Excellent thread, I really love the supercloseups of the insects. Wolf spiders are kind of adorable up close.. and ants are... not nearly as smooth and shiny as we think they are.

Also I must THANK YOU ALL for enclosing animals in spoiler tags and beg that you keep doing it; not only does it keep the thread from stretching, but for folks such as myself who this series gave animal phobias... really, really nice.
