Now, I have yet to do the math on this, but if they had a rocket with enough guts to reach solar escape velocity - 617540 m/s - then they could have just sent the thing up unmanned and rammed the Rock.  That would probably give it enough delta vee to cause a near miss.  Earth is a relatively small target, in the night.
