Do you guys reckon that the series would have been more popular if the darkest and hellish scenes of book 3 hasn't occured?

Several people on this forum including myself found book 3 to be quite disturbing...given that this series was targeted at the young teen audience...prolly carrying over a lot of the younger readers from animorphs, does anyone else think the series would have been more poplular if it'd been toned down?
